Masbate

Masbate lies exactly at the center of the Philippine archipelago. The province consists of 3 major islands, Masbate, Ticao, and Burias islands. Masbate City is the capital of the province. It has a total land area of 7000 square kilometers. The province is bounded on the North by Burias and Ticao Pass, East by San Bernardino Strait, South by the Visayan Sea and West by the Sibuyan Sea. Relative to mainland Bicol, the province faces the Southwestern Coasts of Camarines Sur, Albay and Sorsogon. The islands of Masbate were believed to have been formed out of volcanic rocks over one hundred million years before man made his appearance in the tropical regions of the earth. The general surface of the province is characterized from slightly undulating to rolling and from hilly to mountainous. In each island, the rugged topography is concentrated in the Northeastern portion and gradually recedes to blunt hills and rolling areas in the South, Southeast, and Southwest. During the Spanish occupation, Masbate had shipyards that built ships for Manila-Acapulco trade. The names of places and churches scattered over the province, are reminders of the missionary endeavors made by the Spanish soldiers and missionaries long ago. The American occupation gives way to cattle and mining industries. Masbate’s trade mark is cattle raising. It has become the major source of livelihood in the province. Every 18th of March, the province celebrates Rodeo Filipino, a festival which highlights the Masbate Livestock Week. Featured are various sports activities such as the grand rodeo parade, agro-livestock fair, individual and group competitions in bull riding, steer wrestling carabao race, and other traditional Filipino games. Two large caves in Masbate, the Bat-ongan Caves located in Mandaon, and the Cave within the jurisdiction of Barangay Boca Engano, with an undersea entrance are perfect sites for the daring and adventurous. These Caves were believed to be burial caves, which contain well-sealed human caskets carved of solid wood. Located in Kalanay, Arorong, is the Limestone Hills. The early inhabitants of this place were believed to have practiced jar burials, where onsite excavations in the place may yield human carcasses. The Arorong beach, with its unspoiled natural beauty, is well recommended destination for excursionists. One of the most beautiful the province offers is the well-known Catandayagan Falls, located at Tical Island. Its waters cascades from 60 feet down to its base, where multi-colored fishes cavort. The place is accessible within and hour by motorboat from the provincial capitol.
