Kalinga Apayao
Kalinga is one of the provinces that composed the
Cordillera region. It's position among the assemblage
of mountain ranges within the cordillera Central
acclaimed its title "Prince of the Highlands". Kalinga
is on an elevation of 300 - 5000 feet above sea level.
Its topographical feature is characterized in the
Western portion by sharp crested interlinking peaks of
steep slope, isolated flat lands, plateaus, and
valleys. The Eastern portion has generallly rolling,
gradually sloping foothills with interlocking wide
tracks of flat land and flood plains.
Kalinga is politically subdivided into eight (8)
municipalities namely; Balbalan, Lubuagan, Pasil,
Pinukpuk, Rizal, Tabuk, Tanudan, and Tinglayan.
The Name Kalinga is derived from the Ibanag and
Gaddang word means "Headhunters". In the past, head
hunting was considered noble and a symbol of bravery.
The Kalingas wore Tattoos, particularly on their arms.
To them this is a sign of affluence.
People of Kalinga lived by clique. They display a
spirit of oneness and solidarity;so that they too have
a unique indigeneous socio-political system that
defines their intertribal relationships - the bodong
(peace pact). This is advanced to minimize traditional
warfare and headhunting. And to serve as an
institutional renewal, maintenance and reinforcement
of social ties.
Kalinga like any other provinces is never a mere
stretch of a hallow land, but it proudly speaks of
stimulating spots of water, vistas and legendary
mountains that are worth beholding and frequenting.
The Chico River that flows from Tinglayan to Tabuk, is
one perfect for rafting. Lately the river was declared
as the Whitewater Rafting Capital of the Philippines.
The Palan - ah Falls and Hotsprings, located at Tulgao
West, Tinglayan. The Falls showers down from
approximately 100 meters above, forming a pool on its
base, where anyone can swim. A site ideal for boating
and picnics during the summer months. Located at Puapo
in Dangtalan is the Pasil Natural Dam.
Anyone who adept to Mountain Trekking should
never missed to tread the mountains of Kalinga. One of
this mountains, is the Mt. Mating - oy Dinayao
(Sleeping Mountain). This legendary mountain take the
form of a sleeping lady supinely lying on its back.
Its located on the border of Tinglayan and Tanudan.
Another legendary mountain is located in Dacalan,Mount
Binanatan. Historically known as the entry point of
Philippine Republic President, General Emilio
Aguinaldo, during his retreat to Kalinga.
Sungay View Point is a perfect place for people
who have an eye for natural beauty. This site provide
a superb sight of the valley villages and the
Mountains of Tinglayan, Tanudan, Tabuk and Lubuagan.
It packages an impressive glimpse of the Tulgao and
Dananao Rice Terraces.
