Isabela, is one of the premier provinces of the North. It has been dubbed as the “Rice Granary of the North”, having been adjudged as the most outstanding province in Food Security in the Gawad Sapat Ani Awards conducted by the Department of Agriculture on the year 2000. It comprises an aggregate land area of 10,665 square kilometers, representing almost 40% of the regional territory. It is the largest province in the region and the second largest in the country in terms of land area. The province has 35 municipalities and 1,055 barangays. It has four congressional districts. Santiago City, the commercial center of Region 2, has been declared an independent – Component City; While Cauayan City, the trading center in Isabela, is a component city as ratified on March 30, 2001. Ilagan is the capital town of the province.

It is the largest province in the region and the second largest in the country in terms of land area. The province has 35 municipalities and 1,055 barangays. It has four congressional districts. Santiago City, the commercial center of Region 2, has been declared an independent – Component City; While Cauayan City, the trading center in Isabela, is a component city as ratified on March 30, 2001. Ilagan is the capital town of the province. The province is divided into three physiograpic areas. The Eastern area, straddled by the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, is rugged and thickly forested. A substantial portion is uncharted and the unexplored hinterlands are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna while others are government reservations. The Western area is a sprawling fertile valley knitted with the Central Cordillera and is criss–crossed by the Mighty Cagayan, Siffu, and Magat rivers. Its mountains rise to a peak of about 8,000 feet and is an abode to one of the world’s largest remaining low – altitude rainforests with numerous unknown endemic species of plants and animals and exceptional biological diversity. Isabela is considered the “melting pot of the North”. It is a home for various ethnic groups, like the Ibanags, Gaddangs, Yogads and the Kalingas. The Aetas (Negritos) who ere believed to the aborigines of these groups, can still be found roaming the mountains and forest in the Eastern part of the province. In the later part 19th and 20th centuries, many Ilocanos migrated to the province. Now they constitute the largest group in the province. Isabela Province provides whole spots for a vagabond to hold in view. Palanan, Isabela has in its fold the largest protected area in the country, the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park. The area is more than 300,000 hectares of rainforest, declared to the number one in biodiversity and also one of the to 10 biodiversity “hotspots” in the world. Researchers presumed that many unknown and unnamed species of plants and animals exist in the premises of this forest. It is also confirmed that the area is the habitat of the Philippine Eagle and the cloud Rat. Its coastal areas, which host whales, dolphins and other cetaceans, is ideal for scuba diving and other water sports, and for a trekking challenge. The Aguinaldo Shrine is an added attraction to the park. The Capitol building of Ilagan, host the Isabela Museum and Library, which contain the rich historical and cultural heritage of the Isabelinos. 15 kilometers form Ilagan town proper is the Environmental School, and Fuyo National Park. This place features naturally formed lattices and sparkling rock formation. Within the area is the Pinzal Falls conducive for swimming. Isabela is also dotted with century–old churches. They are: The parish of St. Matthias built on 1753 by the Dominicans. This was declared a national Historical landmark. In Alicia, along the national highway, is the church of Our Lady Of Antiocha, built on 1805. And lastly, the San Pablo Church, which is said to be the oldest in the province. this was built 210 years before Isabela was made a province. Isabela also houses the Asia’s biggest dam project at the time of its construction. This serves the primary function of power generation and irrigation. Its reservoir area of 4,450 hectares has a great potential for water-based recreation like, fishing, boating and water skiing. The plant is accessible by passenger jeepney and bus from Santiago City.
