Ilocos Norte is a rugged land of unique people
who have managed to retain history and perpetuate beauty
.Ilocos Norte has a land area of 3,399.34
square kilometers consisting of alluvial plains,
hills, mountains, coastal and miscellaneous land
types. Its terrain is generaally mountainous and
rocky. It's coastline is dotted with coves and
rivers.It is bounded on the South by Ilocos sur, on
the East by Cagayan and Kalinga, on the Southeast by
Abra and on the West by the China Sea. Ilocos Norte is
politically divided by twenty two municipalities.
Laoag serving as the capital town.Historically, Ilocos
Sur and Ilocos Norte form a single province, but it
was on February 2, 1818, that a Royal Decree was
signed for the splitting of Ilocos into two provinces.
Ilocos has infinite variety to offer historical,
religious, or natural attractions. Religious sites in
Ilocos Norte includes, Paoay Church, listed among
UNESCO's World Heritage.Built on coral blocks and
stucco-plastered bricks, the architure is a unique
combination of Goethic Baroque and Oriental.
construction of this church was started 1704 and
completed 1894. Churches of unique and classical
features stands significantly on different places of
the province. Bacarra has St. Williams Cathedral.
Sarrat has Sta. Monica church and Laoag has Laoag
Parish built on 1880.
Historical attractions comprise by The
Lighthouse at Cape Bojeador, built in 1892. It is the
highest lighthouse in the Philippines; Monuments and
Shrines likewise, are some of those historical sites
in the province;The Tobacco monopoly monument
constructed at the foot of the Marcos Bridge serve as
a memorial to the lifting of the Tobacco Monopoly.
Among the shrines are the shrines General Artemio
ricarte in Batac, Aglipay shrine in Pinili and Juan
Luna shrine in Badoc.
Among the cultural sites, There's the Juan Luna
Museum, that contains, a collection of his painting
including a replica of his masterpiece - Spolarium.
Marcos Museum contains the late President Ferdinand
Marcos memorabilia.
Malacanang of the North, the official residence
of the then President Marcos in Ilocos Norte, is of
the attractions of Ilocos. The house is overlooking
the legendary Paoay Lake. A landlocked lake 30
kilometer away from Suba, Paoay. It has an area of 470
hectares. The lake was declared a National Park under
Republic Act 5613 on JUne 21, 1969.
Ilocos Norte boasts also of an International
Airport.
