Dapitan city is within the province of Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines. It is categorized as one of the second class cities in the country. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 68,178 people in 13,560 households.
It is historically important as being the place where the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal was exiled by the Spanish authorities. Dapitan was then only a quiet and unknown town in Mindanao. But has become a
repository of some of the Philippines’ historical past, when denouncing Spanish domination over his beloved country, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, Philippines National Hero, lived in exile in this faraway land.
While in exile in Dapitan, Dr. Jose Rizal acquired an estate and there spent fruitfully his last four years of exile, that was from 1892 to 1896. There, he practiced medicine, pursued his scientific studies, kept his artistic and literary endeavors. He also was able to widen his knowledge of languages, by learning the language of the natives of the place.
In Dapitan, Dr. Jose Rizal founded a school and a hospital. He also practiced farming to give an example to the people that farming is as good a profession as medicine.
His state in Dapitan is now being administered by the National Historic Institute, following its declaration as a National Shrine.
Dapitan is named by the National Historic Institute as “Shrine City of the Philippines”, because it is aplomb to become the “Dr. Jose Rizal Heritage Center of the Philippines”, by the year 2020.
Dapitan, much to say, is a home for Rizal’s wealthy memorabilia. Its memorable places are very much associated with the country’s beloved hero.
